That article did good to point out the hypocrisy of the racist North, but also reflected the racist paternalistic attitude that prevailed in the South. Clearly stated is the belief that blacks were an inferior population in need of the protection of Southern whites. The author failed to acknowledge the basic humanity and equality of blacks, which should afford them equal rights. Instead, he portrayed blacks as children in need of good parents, and then praised the racist South for being those parents.
